The Search Manager contains six
different search interfaces that provide different functionality based on a
particular situation. (click on the image to enlarge the view)
Smart Search
– The Smart Search dialog allows you to define
multiple searches for your form by simply entering a few fields in a table.
When your user selects a search type, a list of all records is displayed
based on the fields and sort order you specify. When your user selects a
record, they return to the form they were originally on and depending on
your coding, either sees one record in a filtered form or the specific
record in an unfiltered form. The Smart Search will remember the most
frequently selected searches and display those the next time the form is
opened. For example, if there is one search that is used most of the time,
this search is displayed first each time you open a smart search interface.
Advanced Search
– The Advanced Search dialog provides a
powerful and flexible search interface. With it you can find just about
anything using simple or complex criteria. The criteria you enter is done
with very easy to use selection fields and the interface takes care of all
the syntax that is necessary. An unlimited number of searches can be saved
and retrieved. Searches are saved by name with the criteria and the
table/query they are based on. This dialog is modeled after the Microsoft
Office advanced file search dialog. Users who are familiar with this type of
dialog will find it easy to use.
Flex Search
– This type of search allows you to use a
single form for all your form searching needs. It gives you the flexibility
to search for one or all of the fields listed. You can search using partial
or exact keywords as well as adding operands to your searches. The user can
even change the search options on the fly. An example of the Flex Search
interface is displayed below.
Simple Search - The
Simple Search interface can be used to create a filter for a form, form
control, or report. You can also use this type of search to search for data
independently from a form or report and view data using a generic form. The
Simple Search interface is a simplified version of the Advanced
Search interface. Up to 12 different criteria lines can be specified.
Smart Select - The
Smart Select interface has the same look and feel as the Smart Search, but
the Smart Select allows for multiple selections. The Smart Select
will remember the most frequently selected searches and display those the
next time the form is opened. For example, if there is one search that is
used most of the time, this search is displayed first each time you open a
smart select interface.
Total Search - The
Total Search interface can be used to search for data within multiple
tables in a database. You can choose to search only linked tables, only
local tables, or all tables. You must also specify a data type and value to
search for.
